The End of Trailer Rentals - Advertising Pays
Freetrailer - 03-09-2004On Friday 3 September, Freetrailer ApS will launch its free trailer concept at IKEA stores in Taastrup, Århus and Odense. Through Freetrailer, it will be the first time that it is possible to use a trailer for free - without any sales involved.
"This is a very simple idea" says Aksel Blomgren Ambjørner, the man behind the Freetrailer idea. "We bought a number of large closed trailers. And then we sold the surface on the side panels as advertising space." By getting revenue from the advertising, the use of the trailer then becomes free overnight. The Freetrailers must be returned the following morning at the location where it was originally picked up.
The Freetrailers will initially be available at three of the four IKEA stores, and it is part of the concept that the Freetrailers are offered where there is a natural need for transportation. That is was IKEA which first came on board, is no coincidence. The IKEA concept is based on self-serve, where customers carry and assemble their own furniture. The option of using a trailer for free keeps the purchase cheap and more practiacl for the customer.
"We are pleased that our customers can take advantage of the Freetrailer offer", says Marketing Manager of IKEA, Susanne Hedegaard. "We are basically interested in the fact that our customers can go home with their goods in a cheap and convenient way. What is useful and practical for our customers is good for IKEA."
Freetrailers can be booked at www.freetrailer.dk, where a deposit of kr. 785 must be paid in order to use a Freetrailer. IKEA keeps the keys in the stores so it is also possible to use a Freetrailer without booking in advance. If you need a Freetrailer for more than a day, the rental can be extended by paying kr. 185 a day - again a price that is possible only because of the advertising.
Freetrailer ApS have plans to expand their business to several locations where private vehicles are used to pick up the trailers. "It is our goal to have 550 trailers on the roads within a year. From my experience in advertising and in the internet industry, I know that advertisers have a great need for new ways to gain visibility for their ads" says the other Freetrailer parnter, Allan Sønderskov Darré, who is also the director of web business Grapenet ApS. Allan quickly ceased the Freetrailer idea and his good impression of it was reinforced by thorough market research. "The recipe for success is to make sure that all parties involved are winners: the trailer customers, the advertisers and the companies where the trailers are located." says Allan Sønderskov Darré.
